Happy Birthday Mario!

Monday, September 13th, 2010 | Latest News | Leave a response

If you have ever played on a video game, you have probably come across Super Mario. Well as of today, 13th September 2010, the famous little New Yorker is 25 years old. That’s right my friends, Mario is a quarter of a century old today.

Created in 1985 by Nintendo game designer Shigeru Miyamoto, the happy little plumber has since become the most famous video character in the world, appearing in over 200 different games, and selling over 210 million gaming units worldwide.

If you don’t know who Mario is, here are a few facts for you. Mario, originally called Jump Man, is a plumber who lives in the Mushroom Kingdom, and whose main focus in life is to fight King Bowser to save his true love, Princess Peach. Mario, originally from New York apparently, is seen in many different games fighting Bowser the evil turtle, and battling off his minions, alongside his younger brother Luigi, and trusty pet dinosaur, Yoshi.

Not only has Mario’s name changed from Jump Man, and his location has changed from Brooklyn to the Mushroom Kingdom, but it seems Mario’s profession has also changed over the years. Trained as a carpenter, it seems Mario suffered a midlife crisis and changed his career to being a plumber instead. Over the years we have also seen the energetic little plumber try his hand as a doctor, archaeologist, and President of a toy company, before returning to changing peoples pipes in between saving the world.

Over the past 25 years Mario has not aged a day, and is still as fit and agile as he ever was. He must drink a lot of hot water and lemon. For me, I grew up with a Super Nintendo, or a SNES for you cool kids out there, and Super Mario was always one of my favourite games. So much so that this blog is making me want to dig my old console out of the loft again to play!

So if like me you have been a fan of Super Mario since a young age, please join with me after 3.

1, 2, 3, ‘Happy Birthday to you ….’
